So the White House Social Secretary, Desiree Rogers believes that she is the one who has turned the White House into the “people’s house” because she has opened it up to many of the people who normally do not get to visit. What a shocker! It’s odd that I can remember watching tours of the White House on TV that were presented by the First Ladies every year dating back to Jackie Kennedy’s era of being the First Lady. And I didn’t even have to leave my living room, or spend the money for traveling and hotel bills to get there. However, I recall them talking about the schedules on when the White House was open for public tours.
The biggest thing that changed that was when Bill Clinton was elected President and his First Lady was too busy telling him how to run the White House to give a tour on TV. So we didn’t see any tours during his eight year reign. Then came the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the security became so tight that they built short walls around the grounds as boundaries for how close anyone could get to the White House. And I have to admit I’m glad they did that because it would be too easy for one or more of the suicide bombers to get in and destroy the whole building and everyone in it. Then where would we be? So, I’m not sure I like the idea of this current administration opening up the White House to the public.
